I got the idea to do this track from a discussion on the Boogie-talk forum. I used Ableton Live to create the tracks but you could do this in any modern Digital Audio Workstation (DAW).
Here was my process for creating the 3 initial tracks along with screenshots of the individual plugins:
- Downloaded a few decent slow blues grooves for Toontrack EZdrummer free online and I was off to the races
- Created a quick song layout with the different drum grooves I downloaded in standard 12-bar blues
- Recorded the bass part on my Yamaha BB3000S 4-string plugged directly into MBox 2
- Experimented with a few plugins on the bass track, going mainly for an old school sound. Settled on the Line6 Pod Farm plugin and tweaking an Ampeg Flip-top amp head simulator (see screenshot below)
- Recorded the organ part using the Native Instruments B4 instrument and M-Audio Keystation Pro88 USB controller (see screenshot below)
- Experimented with the drum sound also shooting for a vintage feel. I relied on the room mics and brought the kick up using Flux Bittersweet plugin to augment the transients, Camel Crusher for a tubey, compressed feel and finally lopped off a bit of the top end with Ableton's EQ eight (see screenshot below)
- I finished everything up and created a mix with the Waves L3 Multimaximizer
- Each track now has to be converted to MP3 to be able to post on Kompoz...one extra step...
